In honor of its recent opening, Members of the The Downtown Clubs of Raleigh were invited to attend a special event at the Watergate exhibit at the nearby North Carolina Museum of History last week. The exhibit opened on May 17, 2013, the 40th anniversary of the first televised hearing of the Senate Select Committee that investigated President Richard Nixon's 1972 campaign for re-election. The guest of honor at the event was Rufus L. Edmisten, a founding Cardinal Club Member and Deputy City Chief Council member to the Watergate Committee.

Members began their evening with a private tour of Watergate: Political Scandal & the Presidency which included the viewing of significant artificats such as a memo and page from one verison of the Nixon administration's "enemies list," one of the subpoenas served to President Nixon's lawyer, and the gavel Sen. Ervin used while chairing the Senate Select Committee. After the tour concluded, Members arrived back at the Cardinal Club for dinner featuring Pezzi King wines and a four-course meal inspired by the time period. The meal featured items such as Crispy Cottage Cheese and Ketchup, Steak and Meatloaf, and Orzo Stroganoff.

Edmisten met with members between meals and reflected on the events that took place in 1973 and how it impacted America. The members of the Downtown Clubs of Raleigh truly enjoyed this experience and are grateful to have learned more about the historical events that took place 40 years ago.
