Congratulations to Austin Connelly, junior golf alum of Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving, Texas, who has qualified for the 146th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale July 20-23, 2017. Connelly earned his spot on Tuesday by winning a four-player playoff with a birdie during a qualifier at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in England. The British Open will be 20-year-old Connelly’s first major championship.
Employee Partners and Members will especially want to keep their eye on Connelly as ClubCorp is an official sponsor of the golfer, who turned professional in 2016 and currently plays on the European Challenge Tour.
Before turning professional Connelly was ranked as high as fourth in the World Amateur Golf rankings and won the prestigious Jones Cup Invitational in 2015. As a junior golfer, Connelly was one of 12 players on Team USA at the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup in Scotland which resulted in the fourth consecutive win by the Americans.
This past April, Connelly was back at Hackberry where he held a Meet and Greet and Junior Clinic. During the event, Connelly also talked to the young golfers about his path from junior golfer to pro – a path just got a little more exciting. Good luck, Austin!

The University of Texas Club in Austin recently completed a five-month, multimillion-dollar renovation. The club held a 2014 New Member Round-Up Preview Party to celebrate its grand re-opening in June, inviting Members and their prospects to get a first look at the club. New features include the redesigned Longhorn Bar with casual dining, new Texas Star banquette seating and community Joiners Tables, new media area with 103-inch big-screen TV and new Darrell K Royal Power Boardroom with HD videoconferencing, named for the late UT head football coach. The new boardroom features pictures and sayings made famous by the legendary coach. Many current and former members of the UT Athletic Staff attended the event, including former Head Football Coach Mack Brown.
Eight-time Pro Bowler and four-time First Team All-Pro and Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith’s extreme talent doesn't end on the football field – he’s taking fundraising to the next level and raising money for underprivileged youth.
Smith and his wife, Pat, created the Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities to “offer kids education and experiences that broaden their opportunities for success.” To help raise funds for their organization, the Smiths host seven qualifying golf tournaments around the country, evaluating a team’s “fundraising skills [and]…golf ability.” At the end of the qualifying rounds, “the highest fundraising team and the best golfers from each tournament will be invited to the Emmitt Smith Celebrity Invitational” in Dallas in May 2014.
We look forward to the next qualifying round in Austin, as well as future qualifiers!

The Acura ClubCorp Champions Classic began this week at the Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. With more than 80 teams competing through this weekend, the 54-hole tournament promises to be a fun and spirited competition.
At the welcome reception and dinner, Australian golfer Greg Norman made an appearance. He spoke about life lessons he learned on the golf course and then opened the floor to questions from the audience. The crowd learned that Norman practiced golf techniques for 10 hours a day, six days a week and did not play rounds of golf between tournaments. His favorite tournament is The Masters and his favorite competitor was Seve Ballesteros, who passed away in 2011. Norman said that both of their games improved when they played together; Ballesteros had a strong short game, while Norman was better at long drives.
When they're not on the course, players and their spouses can enjoy Acura test-drives through the beautiful Texas Hill Country, visit Austin’s local attractions, meet new friends over dinner or cocktails and even win door prizes.
The annual Taste of Lone Star Community Event recently took place at The Hills of Lakeway in Austin, giving a whole new meaning to “everything is bigger and better in Texas.” Attended by more than 200 people from 22 participating Society of Lone Star Clubs, Members and Guests enjoyed an evening of delicious food, great friends and live music by the oh-so-talented Jenna Paulette!
Members and Guests not only tasted, but judged the culinary creations in a variety of categories including Best Presentation and Best Overall Taste.
And the winners were……
Best Presentation- The University of Texas Club
Best Overall Taste- The Hills of Lakeway
Congratulations to both Clubs!
Last week, Sept. 5-9, was the 2012 Acura ClubCorp Team Championship at Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas.
Most participants arrived Tuesday or Wednesday night for the practice round during the day and the welcome reception on Wednesday evening.
Members and Employee Partners loved the chance to stay in the same hotel, and the ability to conveniently walk down to all of the competitions and festivities. The days were hot, but the heat didn’t take away from the event and Saturday morning was much cooler, hitting the mid 80s at the end of the day and creating a comfortable end to the tournament. Barton Creek is surrounded by Texas' beautiful hill country and many attendees brought their spouses, who could relax and sightsee when they weren't cheering on their favorite teams.
Canyon Crest Country Club in Riverside, Calif. clinched the win in an exciting three-hole playoff between a team from Canyon Crest and a team from Canyon Creek Country Club in Richardson, Texas. Canyon Crest got an edge by recording a birdie on the third hole in the playoff, where Canyon Creek made par.
This year’s Championship had a few notable firsts. In the tournament’s 26-year run, this was the first time Canyon Crest had won the event. Additionally, it was also the first time a female pro has won the tournament along with her team. We want to extend a hearty congratulations to Jennifer Dolph and the rest of Team One from Canyon Crest on reaching these Championship milestones. Additionally, congratulations to Bob Blumberg, a Member at The Clubs of Kingwood, on his hole-in-one on Sept. 6.
The rest of the tournament was tight and close. The evenutal third through sixth place teams all tied for third place at the end of the third round with a score of 174. In a scorecard play-off, East Lake Woodlands Country Club from Tampa Bay, Fla. took third, Trophy Club Country Club from Trophy Club, Texas took fourth, Canyon Gate Country Club from Las Vegas took fifth and Treesdale Golf and Country Club from Gibsonia, Pa. finished in sixth.
ClubCorp was honored to have so many outstanding sponsors at this year's Team Championship. The title sponsor was Acura, spoiling the attendees with two-hour test "Guest" drives in a brand new Acura during their stay at Barton Creek and offering a grand prize of the use of an Acura for one year, which was won by Adam Tamas, a Member at Granite Bay Country Club in Granite Bay, Calif.
Another lucky winner, Tom Reed, a Member from River Creek Club in Leesburg, Virginia won a three-day stay at the Lodge at Doonbeg with two rounds of golf on a Greg Norman course for shooting closest to the pin.
During the Saturday night awards dinner, Chuck Feddersen, Regional Vice President, Golf & Country Clubs Division, and Cathy Harbin, Vice President, Golf Revenue, presented all of the additional awards and prizes, including Bennelli shotguns, a four-day golf-and-fishing stay at Cheyenne Ridge Signature Lodge in Pierre, South Dakota, presented by the Wyoming Club; Maui Jim sunglasses, Foot Joys My Joys golf shoes; Greg Normans golf shirts; Crocs golf shoes; a Disney trip, and Golf Buddy Voice and Platinum GPS systems.
Among many other notable sponsors offering prizes and promotions were Callaway Golf, Nike, TaylorMade adidas Golf, Seabourn and Titleist.
