The staff and Members at Canyon Gate Country Club in Las Vegas have been carefully following the USGA Senior Amateur Championship that started over the weekend at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach, California, as not one, but two Canyon Gate Members competed.
Bruce Belcoure (left) and Frank Abbott (right) proudly represented the Club in the national tournament for amateur golf competitors, which began with 36 holes of stroke play with the top 64 competitors advancing to the match play portion. It is rare that, with just 156 players from more than 2,250 entries, two Members from one Club would qualify to compete. Belcoure, low qualifier at TPC Summerlin on August 18, earned his place at his first Senior Amateur with an even-par 72. Abbott tied for low qualifier with one-over-par 73 at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington, on August 27. This was his fifth trip to the national event, at which he was finalist (runner-up) in 2003.
Frank and Bruce played well on a long, hard course but missed the cut set at 149, the lowest in USGA Senior Amateur history.
“Both these men are still considered champions in our eyes!” says Canyon Gate Country Club.
Congratulations to Canyon Gate Country Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, and their PGA Junior Team, which won the first season of the PGA Junior League in Southern Nevada. The Junior Team, consisting of twelve juniors ranging in ages 9-13, competed against teams from prestigious clubs in the area, including TPC Summerlin, TPC Las Vegas, Anthem Country Club and Boulder Creek Golf Club. The team was coached by Member Mike Salerno with help from Canyon Gate First Golf Assistant Toby Meacham.
With the win of the League, Canyon Gate will get the honor of having four of the ten junior players on the Las Vegas all-star team, which will compete against the Phoenix all-star team in early August and will be coached by Canyon Gate Head Golf Professional David Smith. A win in August will take the club to the Southwest Section and, more wins, eventually to the regional in September in San Francisco.
Congrats again to Canyon Gate and good luck!
