Reggie Kratzer, General Manager at The Country Club of the South has been named the General Manager of the Year by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA). This award honors the General Manager who displays unwavering support of the AJGA and junior golf by creating a memorable tournament experience for players, families, staff and volunteers. The Country Club of the South is the site of the AJGA’s Wells Fargo Junior Classic presented by Mizuno held each spring.

Kratzer has been heavily involved in Wells Fargo Junior Classic since taking over the role of general manager at Country Club of the South in 2012. While he has been in that role, the tournament has received four AJGA tournament awards, including the 2011 Hospitality Award, the 2012 Open Tournament of the Year Award and the 2013 Charitable Giving Award.

Several greater Atlanta-area clubs teamed together recently to play their First Tee Marathon at The Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, Georgia. Participating clubs included Country Club of Gwinnett, Bear's Best, Woodside Plantation Country Club and Country Club of the South.

The groups teed off at 7 a.m. and, 10 hours later, completed 100 holes of golf and raised almost $20,000 for The First Tee! What a great way for a team to come together for a good cause.

The bar for next year has now been set and, with more than 30 clubs now in the Atlanta market, the results should go far beyond and serve as an event that unites even more of the area Golf Professionals.

The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) has named the 2012 Exide Technologies Junior Open presented by Mizuno, held in April 2012 at The Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, Ga., as The Tournament of the Year.

“Because of the outstanding commitment made by our title sponsor, Exide Technologies, and tremendous support from the membership, we have continued to conduct a top quality tournament,” said Tournament Chairman Chuck Strong.
 “Members and sponsors want to get involved because they see what the AJGA is about, an organization that not only focuses on improving and providing playing opportunities for junior golf, but building character in these young men and women.”

According to the AJGA, year after year, the Club Members have wholeheartedly supported the tournament by seeking out and securing sponsors, volunteering and creating a wonderful experience for the young players and their families.

Additionally, ever since the tournament started playing at the Club, the junior golf program there has seen dramatic growth.

“Three years ago we had 12 kids involved and this year we had 80. The increase has to do with the exposure parents received at the tournament and the excitement over junior golf,” Strong said.

Understandably, the tournament’s impact goes above and beyond the Club. According to the AJGA, since the tournament’s first year in 2010, it has provided the community with an economic boost of more than $270,000.

Additionally, Junior-Am tournament fundraising events have raised almost $50,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta and during the tournament, head golf pros at the Club held interactive clinics on the driving range for Big Brothers and Sisters.

Next year, the tournament will be held April 19-21, 2013 at The Country Club of the South.

When ClubCorp acquired The Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, Ga., during the summer of 2010, it was in dire need of a transformation, both in its’ physical appearance and in the way things were run.

“Internal success breeds into external success,” said Mike Selk, food and beverage director at the Club and ClubCorp Southeast regional food and beverage director. “We streamlined our operations and changed everything, from menus to opening and closing procedures. Our staff morale improved and this really shows through the Membership.”

One example was when Selk, along with his food service staff of 40, discovered that a large majority of their diners were interested in wine, and wanted more opportunities to learn about it. So they decided to host events centered around wine, tastings, wine dinners, clubs and sales. Eventually, Members were beginning to buy their wine directly from the Club.

“The important thing to do is to really get involved in the Membership and really figure out what they want,” said Selk. “People won’t actually notice the dining room is different if all they want is more programming.”

During his regular interaction with the company’s national management team, Selk pays attention to what unique programs were having success and good reception at the other Clubs.

“One of the advantages of my position is I get to steal all the time,” Selk said humorously. “I have 12 Clubs of my own, and I regularly get emails from other regional directors. I steal ideas from the others shamelessly.”

The implimentation of great programs, impecible service standards and a steller newly reinvented Clubhouse resulted in a surge in sales and Membership, and is what makes The Country Club of the South the success that it is today.

Congratulations to Selk, Service Director Chad Barnicoat and the entire staff at the Club for keeping up with company standards and always striving for excellence. Keep up the good work!

People can tell you how well luxury sports cars handle being daily drivers, but getting behind the wheel of one and trying it out for yourself is the only way you can truly appreciate it.

The day-long events at The Country Club of the South and Stonebriar Country Club were very successful and completely complimentary to Members.

Each lucky driver was given an intro to the cars before they went on their test-drive, switching cars halfway so everyone was able to try out both of the driving machines.

Porsche and the Clubs were able to offer a significant number of spots to the Members, and the events were a complete success.

The Country Club of the South in Johns Creek, Georgia, recently celebrated the 4th of July with more than 1,500 Members and Guests in attendance, a record-breaking event for the club.

The day of activities included a DJ at the pool, games, a golf cart and bicycle parade, face-painting, and a kids’ zone. The evening entertainment featured a five-piece band, a Member singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and, finally – the real star of the night – an amazing 20-minute fireworks show.
