Cherry Valley Golf Course Superintendent Mentors Junior member for High School Project
Gregory Byrne, Head Golf Course Superintendent at Cherry Valley Country Club in Skillman, New Jersey, really rose to the occasion for some Members whose son, a senior in high school, needed help with a school project. As part of a capstone experience needed to graduate, Griffin Ferrara was required to choose a field of his choice, immerse himself in a study related to that field and give a presentation to students and faculty on his findings. Ferrara, an avid golfer at the club and interested in the environment, asked Gregory how he balances golf course maintenance and the environment.
Gregory carved out several days in his schedule to allow Griffin to follow him and learn about managing the golf course in an environmentally sound way. They covered creating an agronomic plan by assessing the soils, water and plant needs and an integrated pest management plan that is safe for the environment, effective and efficient and cost effective.
In the end, Ferrara was fascinated by the scope of Gregory’s job and based his presentation, which was met with great interest by the faculty and his peers, on the decision-making methods. Ferrara knocked it out of the park and went on to graduate with a new level of respect for the work Golf Course Superintendents do every day. For both Ferrara and Gregory, the experience was great – true Magic Moments throughout.
