The first book by Jeannie Ralston, The Unlikely Lavender Queen: A Memoir of Unexpected Blossoming, is a story of growth and maturation. After a stimulating life of magazine writing in Manhattan and Austin and engaging in a bargain with her husband, Ms. Ralston reluctantly moves to rural Texas where she takes over a lavender farm and builds it into a successful business—all while in the process of transforming herself, her community, and the surrounding agriculture industry. The book, about love, commitment, and learning to let go, touches on areas with which women in their 30’s and 40’s often wrestle—family, commitment, self-reliance, reinvention, success, and community. It is a coming-of-age story—a coming of middle age.

For more than 23 years, Ms. Ralston has written for magazines, both on staff and freelancing. Her work has been published in Life, Time, National Geographic, The New York Times, The Smithsonian, Audubon, Texas Monthly, Glamour, Conde Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure, Real Simple, Allure, Ladies Home Journal, and This Old House. A native of Kingsport, Tennessee and a graduate of the University of South Carolina, she now lives with her husband, photographer Robb Kendrick, and two sons in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
