Classic Movie Night
SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE
6:00 p.m. – Introduction by Dave Cupp
Dave Cupp, a Senior Lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was for 25 years the news director of the NBC TV affiliate in Charlottesville, Va., and the anchor of the station’s six o’clock news. Almost as ardent a movie fan as he is admirer of Thomas Jefferson -- all those years in Charlottesville -- he has introduced previous films for Classic Movie Night, and this time will not only talk about the broader view of romantic comedies in Hollywood history but give us a glimpse of the times – the news stories and headlines – that marked 1993.
7:00 pm – Dinner and the Film
This popular 1993 romantic comedy is the first of our Classic Movie Nights in the new year – a year that marks The Carolina Club’s 20th Anniversary, having also opened in 1993.
Directed and co-written by Nora Ephron -- who also gave us "When Harry Met Sally" -- the film stars Tom Hanks as a young widower with a son, who wants a new mother … and thinks he’s found her when he hears Meg Ryan’s character on a talk show. How he – and fate – bring them together, when she lives on the East coast and he and his Dad live on the West Coast, has more than its share of charming twists and turns, even though it takes quite a few of these for them all to finally meet atop the Empire State Building … à la the ill-fated reunion of their romantic predecessors in "An Affair to Remember," a film that threads through this one.
[Running time: 105 minutes]
