City Club Los Angeles is where diverse community and business leaders connect to move the city, the nation and the world forward.
We have a great opportunity in our new City Club Los Angeles to create and establish Member traditions and programs. On January 18th, we met with all Committee Chairs lead by our Board of Governors Chairman, Troy Jenkins. I am very impressed with the enthusiasm and spirit of all the committee chairpersons this year; they mirror the energy of the Members and staff. Mr. Jenkins set the tone by getting to know each chairperson on a more personal basis. The discussions were centered on committees helping and cross promoting each other. Discussions also focused on the needs of Members and the responsibility of the committees to create more educational, networking, professional development, social, and of course food and beverage events.
We have added a new committee for Art and Entertainment which will be chaired by Marilyn Solomon. This committee will develop programming for the Screening Room, the cabanas and the big screen in the Aperture lounge. Some of the Screening room event may be 2 days of set programming with documentaries, first run movies, date night dinner and a movie, family night with movies for your children and documentaries narrated by their producer. This committee will also be in charge of the Art displays in the Art Walk with rotating quarterly displays.
We would like Members sign up for a committee role in 2014. We have opportunity on many committees and would like you to participate if
you believe you can contribute to the committee. Nelly will put a list of all the committees and their chairs in the newsletter. If you see a committee you have interest in please contact Nelly. Committee involvement is the best way to maximize your membership as well as meet LA's most influential people. Look for Nelly's article which will explain the availability of committee and the purpose of the committee.
Remember "We are LA"
With a new club comes new ideas, and we wanted to establish a more formal communication with City Club Members. We hope you enjoy this first edition.
I want to thank all of you, our Members, for helping to usher in a New Year and a new chapter for City Club Los Angeles. We had such a spectacular Grand Opening back in November and enjoyed some of our favorite Member traditions like the Crab Boil and Holiday Brunch before the end of 2013. I can’t say enough how delighted we are to have a gorgeous new club and dedicated Members to serve. My team was also enthusiastic for our opening and couldn’t wait to serve our Members. As much as City Club is your home away from home, it is so for our committed staff and team. They enjoyed seeing you over the holidays as much as I did.
As I am certain you are, I am excited for 2014. We have such a unique opportunity to nurture our Club culture, to grow our Membership with wonderful men and women, and respected business people in Los Angeles. We have an opportunity to build new Member traditions, create remarkable memories, host outstanding private events and meetings, and enjoy delectable dining experiences courtesy of our new chef, Mark Gold. I hope you will take advantage of all City Club Los Angeles has to offer. I hope you’ll make the most of your Membership and that we’ll have the chance to serve you again and again and again in 2014. Happy New Year!
We are in the homestretch for the New City Club Los Angeles! I tour the Club at least three times a day, trying to expedite construction any way I can. Because I see it so often, many times I am not aware how awesome this is going to be as I am so focused on the work which has yet to be completed. The days when I take a Member for a walk through, are the moments that I begin to appreciate all that has been accomplished.
The magnificent height of the ceilings, the complexity of the Aperture Lounge, the detail of the Arbor Dining room, the fabulous programming we have in store to compliment this one of a kind "City Club Los Angeles" are all details I get excited about. I know all the General Managers in ClubCorp cannot wait for the finished Club and once again hear the innovative and creative ideas that come from the City Club. We will continue to raise the bar for all to perform.
The Gateway rooms are spectacular. These have muted glass fronts with sliding glass doors and a divine view of the city to the ocean. The Tom Bradley board room is going to change the way you hold your executive meetings. Some serious business will take place in that room which oozes power. I am thrilled with the ballroom and the overall feel of the room and its warmth. It is big but yet it has charm and comfort that will lend itself to meld into your business or social plans.
Taking Members on tours gives me great pride. I hear "WOW!" a lot. It will feel like Christmas has come early this year, as you will be very proud of your new Club and its design. When designing, we took into consideration all the ways you do business today. We actually hired a company to follow Members, non-Members and former Members for a couple of days to see exactly how people spend their days professionally and socially. You must admit the way we do business and interact socially today is far different from the way it was when City Club was established 25 years ago. The new design is geared help you save money and save time; we all need more time.
Please feel free to call me or any of the staff to if you would like to take a tour as we are near completion. I will announce ASAP the precise date of opening but wouldlike to see all of you at the Charity Grand Opening November 23. Please call Nelly for reservations. All entry fees are tax deductible as it all goes to Charity.
We want to make sure all of our Members know that our Grand Members and Charity Classic has been moved to 11/23. We are excited to welcome Members to the Aperture lounge beginning 11/4 and in the Arbor Upscale Dining Room on 11/11. Please help us share this news with our Member community and friends!
Your City Club LA Team
The Member Ballrooms are sure to be a highlight of your Club experience. When you see the finished design you will see why we named the individual rooms as we did. We have three sections, Santa Monica, Hollywood, and the Harbor room to make up the full Angeles Ballroom. The carpet pattern looks like a
freeway clover leaf; I love it. The Angeles ballroom is divisible into 3 separate function rooms. Santa Monica and Harbor have the ability to seat 100 each and the Hollywood will seat 200 people. Combined the Angeles Ballroom will seat 400 and accommodate 700 standing. Another exciting addition is the pre-function area adjacent to the ballroom. It is the perfect pre-meeting area to enjoy a cocktail, from the built-in bar, prior to going into the ballrooms. This is a new feature for us to enjoy, as Bunker Hill did not have convenient pre-function space. The pre-function area will allow over 400 standing.
On the technical side of the space, we are looking forward to utilizing over 130 LED lights with the ability to change the colors. We have a GOBO light which has the ability to display the name of the function or company. We have purchased a black and white dance floor which can be mixed and matched for an added touch of groovy. We have set up a sound system which allows up to 8 wireless microphones or lavalieres. Ceiling heights from 12' to 16' make this a truly Grand Ballroom.
We've made sure the set up the space so that we can include all the bells and whistles for your private event. Now is the time to start booking and planning for your 2013 holiday functions and your weddings or large parties for 2014. Ernest and Khrysta are ready to help make your private event spectacular!
Here's a neat little fact; The Aperture lounge is double the size of the Vista 54. As the Member Lounge, The Aperture Lounge will be to focal point of the Club. This will be where business and social relations begin and gets seriously blurred in the process. I have talked a lot about the wonderful new features of the Club but I wish to remind you of one of the strong benefits of the City Club Los Angeles. You may have clients, friends or colleagues who wish to come with you to the Club and if you are like me you may not wish to pay for 20 of your colleagues or for the lunch or dinner. We do allow guests of Members to use a credit card when accompanied.
I am leading today's conversation with my "new favorite" room. (Slowly but surely every room is becoming my favorite!) Without question, this is like no other Club. You are about to find a new and wonderful experience and you will say "how did we ever do without it?" I'm talking about the 15- seat Screening Room. We designed this to be a wonderful, high-tech amenity for you, as you enjoy your new City Club Los Angeles. I've been thinking about the many ways Members can take advantage of the screening room. Here are some of my ideas:
A professional filmmaker who needs an intimate setting to entertain your clients as well as present your potential Oscar winning film to your investors.
An executive who needs to pitch an ad campaign or research findings, where a 109" rear-projection with "active 3D" will add just the right impact.
Group of friends who want to enjoy a really nice dinner, matched to the theme of the movie following. Great Gatsby anyone?
Celebrate a special occasion by viewing a personal video of family and friends.
Have a children's birthday party and support this with a current movie seen in 3D.
Let your imagination run wild how you can use this to impress you top clients or sales team, or create special memories with loved ones. I will be back with more later, as everyday I'm finding my new favorite feature of your City Club Los Angeles.
We are LA,
In designing the Club one of our strongest efforts was to open up the Club to brighten and lighten the expansive space. In this design we ended up with only two interior rooms (no windows). One is by design, the Screening Room, which I will share with you later, but the other is the room we call "Imagine". This room is specifically purposed for you to use when you are trying to rebrand your company, think outside the box, or just get into creative mode. This is the room you would take your creative team to open their minds and explore the opportunities to "Imagine". I am attaching some of the design concepts that went into this room; you be the judge.
Have you seen the AT&T commercials with the guy and a group of young children? In one conversation, he asks them to share the largest number they know and they all present their number. After he says, "I think we're looking for infinity plus infinity," the one girl questions, "What about infinity TIMES infinity?" The man acts and gestures like his head is exploding. This is the feeling you should have when you go into the "Imagine" room. It should push your conversations and expand your mind!
Don't forget, you can take a hard hat tour and check out the Imagine room in progress. We offer tours on Monday at 6pm and Wednesdays at Noon. Of course, Members are always welcome to give us a call for a private tour. We all love seeing you and showing off your new Club!
WE ARE LA,
The push is on. It is an amazing feeling to take a tour of the new Club every day. Even within one day, drastic changes can be seen and the Club is coming together before our eyes. Being here in the same building is convenient, but not having the great conversations with Member on a daily basis makes me a little lonely. I miss seeing you all! I take multiple trips up to the 51st floor to insure the Club is on schedule.
Not being a contractor, I enjoy this stage and I will tell you the kitchen is coming together wonderfully. We expect to have the kitchen totally done by end of next week. We have added about 1000 Sq. Ft. to the kitchen vs. the space we had at Bunker Hill. The layout is particularly efficient as it is being specially designed to fit the needs of our Members and their dining interests today. The equipment will reflect the equipment necessary to accomplish all culinary needs for our
Arbor dining room, the Aperture Lounge , and the expanded ball room which will seat 400. I never new I could get so excited about walk-ins and ovens.
It's perfect timing, as we are in the middle of interviewing our Executive Chef. We have interviewed many candidates and narrowed the choices down to 3 candidates. We will be culinary testing at the Center Club later this week with a panel from here and Center Club. We anticipate making a decision on the Executive Chef by next week. Keep an eye out for the announcement. We are eager for you to meet your new Chef.
These are exciting times and we cannot wait to show you your new Club. If you have not taken a hard hat tour come on over! Many members have popped by to say hello and check the progress. It's best if you can call us to let us know you are coming. Be sure to bring your friends to show off your new club.
WE ARE LA,
A quick update today on the move from Bunker Hill to the City National Bank Building. The move was not unlike many other moves in my life. It was stressful and a lot of hard work! I would like to thank the entire staff of City Club with leadership from Brian Ayers and Enrique Quezada in the heart of the house and John Brennan (our new Assistant General Manager) and Juan Robles for their leadership in the front of the house. It was truly a team effort and I am proud of how the City Club staff has been handling all of the changes. Even during an emotional move, they have not skipped a beat and well exceeded my expectations. On a side note, much of the Club furnishings were sold (thank you to the buyers) and proceeds will go to the Disabled Vets. Some of the artwork we didn't sell will be re-purposed and re-framed for the new Club. Yet with all that, we still managed 5 days of moving ourselves and loading up the 4th floor of the CNB Building with tons of equipment, dishes, silver, files, and much, much more.
I took this kind of lonely picture, leaving behind 20 years of wonderful memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I am truly blessed with a wonderful crew to work with and by far and away the best Members in the world. Thank you City Club on Bunker Hill for defining what a Club should be. Welcome City Club Los Angeles...about to redefine what the City of Los Angeles should be.
