JOHNS CREEK (April 11, 2018) – The Callaway Golf Junior Classic, hosted by The Country Club of the South since its inception in 2009, has been named the 2017 Open Tournament of the Year by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.
The Tournament of the Year Award is given annually to the tournament that showcases the AJGA, its members, sponsors and host facility better than any other event on the Association’s schedule. During the 2017 Callaway Golf Junior Classic, every player had a name plate on the driving range, saw their name on a PGA TOUR-like electronic scoreboard, received an additional backpack and duffel bag from Callaway and had walking scorers and standard bearers during the final round. Parents and players were also treated to three complimentary meals during the 54-hole event and a U.S. service member greeted pairings groups on No. 18 during the final round.
“We are delighted to be named the 2017 Open Tournament of the Year and realize so many other great events are deserving of this recognition,” said Chuck Strong, longtime Tournament Chair. “This award would not be possible without Callaway Golf, the Tournament Committee, our loyal volunteers, various sponsors and The Country Club of the South’s Head Golf Professional Steve White and Superintendent William Oakley. I’m proud of the professional execution by our supporters and the AJGA and look forward to the 2018 tournament.”
The Country Club of the South membership has embraced the tournament year after year, championing the event by volunteering, securing sponsors and creating a first-class tournament experience for players and parents. The AJGA previously honored the Callaway Golf Junior Classic with the 2011 Hospitality Award, 2012 Open Tournament of the Year Award, the 2013 Charitable Giving Award and the 2014 GM of the Year Award.
“ClubCorp is committed to growing the game of golf among juniors,” said Mark Burnett, ClubCorp president and COO. “So, I am very proud that, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the members and staff at The Country Club of the South, the Callaway Golf Junior Open is such a success and a standout among the many AJGA tournaments across the country.”
The AJGA will return to The Country Club of the South for the 10th year of the Callaway Golf / Ollie Schniederjans Junior Classic April 27-29, 2018.
