Plano, with a 2011 population of over 261,000, is a prosperous place. In 2008, the City received national attention as being the nation's Most Affluent City and Best City to Create Wealth. JCPenney, Pizza Hut, Frito-Lay, Encana, Texas Health Resources, Capital One and Rent-A-Center are all headquartered in Plano. Several technology giants have major R&D operations here including Texas Instruments, Ericsson, McAfee, CA, Intuit and Alcatel-Lucent. These companies attract highly skilled workers from throughout the US and abroad.
Plano, unlike other affluent locations, is affordable. It has low taxes, housing prices and unemployment compared to most metros in the U.S. The Plano Independent School District is nationally regarded and provides an education comparable in quality to many top private schools.

“Plano, Texas. Smart people, smart place.” is not just a tagline, it’s true. Plano residents are highly educated, young, and ethnically diverse. Over 53% of adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher (more than twice the national average).
Plano's Young and Diverse Population
In 1970, the population was 17,872. It had more than doubled five years later, then doubled again by 1980, when the total surpassed 72,000, more than half from outside of Texas.
Today, Plano is the fourth largest City in the Dallas-Fort Worth region with over 265,000 residents. And, it is a young population with Plano residents between the ages of 25-44 accounting for nearly one-third of the population. Over six million people reside in the Dallas-Fort Worth MSA and over four million are in the Dallas-Plano-Irving Metropolitan District.
The city also has a diverse population. Plano's Asian community represents over 14% of the population; more than triple the national average. Other segments of the population include that Hispanics represent 14.8%, African Americans 6.6%, Whites 62.7% and Other at 1.6%.
