Tabard Theater Trip[ X ]
Travel Council presents... Tabard Theatre Trip!
The first fun "travel" adventure of the new year won't take us physically far from "home" but none the less we will get to "travel" to somewhere we have never been!
Join us for the theater premiere performance of "Looking Over the President's Shoulder" at the intimate Tabard Theatre in downtown San Jose on Friday Feb 8th. Here's what the play is all about:
Times certainly have changed. It used to be that the only way for an African-American to get into the Oval Office was as part of "the help." Today, one resides there as Chief Executive. During Black History Month in 2013, Tabard presents LOOKING OVER THE PRESIDENT'S SHOULDER, James Still's play based on the memoirs of Alonzo Fields, who served four administrations as chief butler at the White House. Elegant, educated, and classically trained as a musician, Fields wanted only to become an opera singerbut the Great Depression intervened. In 1931 he took what he thought would be a temporary position to support his family but he stayed on and thrived for 21 years observing the upstairs/downstairs residencies of the Hoovers, Roosevelts, Trumans, and Eisenhowers, as well as guests such as Winston Churchill, Marian Anderson (Fields's idol), and Errol Flynn. Economic turmoil, war, and social and racial unrest are acknowledgedfrom the perspective of a man who oversaw the most prestigious address in America.
This performance is not only entertaining but offers us a peek into history. Tickets are limited (so time is of the essence) and are only $25 per person.
Prior to the 8 pm performance we will be meeting at Il Fornio between 5:30 and 6 to enjoy their happy hour menu which ends at 6:30.
