Mark Addleson: 'The search for new management practices: why we need them and what they look like'

Whether it is running a business, organizing a not-for-profit association, or administering a government agency, management is supposed to provide answers to how do this well, to get good results.   Asking 'what is the work we do and what does it take to do it well – to get good results, ' my talk will highlight the fact that traditional, top-down management practices are not compatible with the work we do.  The work we do is creative and cooperative.  People do it by networking.  I'll explain how management practices actually undermine people's efforts to produce good results, identify what we need to change, and offer a picture of what 'new management' looks like.


Mark Addleson’s Bio:

Before joining George Mason University in 1994, Professor Addleson taught for more than 20 years in his native South Africa at the University of the Witwatersrand's Graduate School of Business Administration, where he was head of the General Management program (marketing, strategy, economics).
From 1996 until 2006 Mark directed the Masters program in Organization Development and Knowledge Management (ODKM) in Mason's School of Public Policy. In keeping with the needs of today's knowledge workers, the program focus is on agile, networked, team- and group-based ways of organizing, to support creativity and collaboration.

Mark has consulted with many companies and public and non-profit organizations both in the United States and South Africa.  From 1989 to 1994, he was a director of Econometrix, a firm of consultants with clients across all sectors of the economy. He is an Associate of the OCL Group, working on organizational change.
Professor Addleson publishes regularly in academic journals and has authored books, newspaper articles, and papers presented at local and overseas conferences. His most recent book, Beyond Management: Taking Charge at Work, published by Palgrave, is about knowledge workers, knowledge-work and how to organize it effectively.
