Dr. Bowers has "lived several lives," he admits, and he promotes that!
He was born in Beaver Falls (Pennsylvania) and worked as a 'soda jerk' in the small town's favorite drug store hangout while attending high school. Salutatorian of his graduating class, he went to two Pennsylvania small colleges -- Westminster and Geneva, graduating summa cum laude from Geneva in 1948. While in college, he managed to get into broadcasting at two area stations. He became an instructor at Geneva and was appointed to their public relations office.
In 1950, he entered the U. S. Army, serving in the Korean War through 1952, and as an officer in the Army Reserves until 1968. In 1953, he returned to his Geneva posts for three more years and back at WBVP, his old radio station, in programming and was introduced to television, a new broadcast element.
Summers, he attended Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University, to earn his master's degree. After Geneva, he served as an administrator at Washington College (Maryland) and then the University of Pittsburgh, where he also became a member of the first doctoral studies class in the new Graduate School
of Public and International Affairs.
He served as Vice President of Coe College (Iowa) and Carleton College (Minnesota) and served as an advisor to the higher education staff at the Ford Foundation. In 1968, he joined the staff of New York Mayor John Lindsay and became Executive Officer of the New York Public Library system.
In 1970, he was asked to do a monthlong study of the Scripps Clinic & Research Foundation in La Jolla (California) and was persuaded by their Board to move to California in 1971 to help implement the strategic plan he recommended. He served in several roles at Scripps and retired as President of the Scripps Institutions of Medicine & Science Foundation in 1993.
He has been an active consultant since 1994, at Scripps Health and other not-for-profit institutions.
A 'part-time' restaurateur, he was a Founder of the American Institute of Wine & Food, with Julia Child, Richard Graff and Robert Mondavi.
He has been active in other national and local organizations for more than two decades.
