Most importantly financial support for local Mansfield area residents in need! Over $350,000 distributed to date!
The Battle of the Nines is a unique philanthropic organization that was started at Walnut Creek Country Club by golfers in 1985. At that time, there were only two nine-hole courses, the Willow and the Pecan. Tom Rogala, representing the Pecan and Mike Tierney, representing the Willow, each felt that their nine had the better golfers. This friendly rivalry was the foundation for the first Battle of the Nines tournament – a tournament that would prove to everyone which team had the better players. To make it even more interesting, they decided to make it a charitable event and donate the proceeds to needy persons in the Mansfield area. What started small has expanded to include multiple fund raising events that culminate each year with the Battle of the Nines Charity Golf Classic. Since its inception, over $350,000.00 has been donated to individuals in need, organizations in the Mansfield area, and MISD. We have helped pay medical and funeral bills, provided financial support for families who were devastated by fire, and have even helped a student go to prom who was overcoming major hurdles! While the Willow is just a memory, we keep it in our hearts by representing it along with the Oak and Pecan courses with a male/female team who compete against each other! Playing a scramble format, we provide mulligans, skips, and a string to make sure you have fun! This event is open to all WCCC members and their guests. And you don't have to be a great golfer....many players only play in this event!
