VPI grew out of mission work in rural Haiti. A Haitian boy had fallen into a vat of boiling water and could only receive help in the US. A UN helicopter brought him to Tampa for treatment. Five years later a Ugandan girl was diagnosed with a life threatening cardiac condition. She walked eight miles to send Dr. Sylvia Campbell an email asking for help. The Rotary Club provided transportation and St. Joseph’s cardiac surgical team provided surgery. The AIDS epidemic has devastated a generation, leaving homes headed by orphans and widowed grandmothers. Housing has been an ongoing need. Over time, mission work in villages around the world grew to include teams from many faith traditions, and Village Partners International was born. VPI’s areas of focus are Health, Education, Housing and Entrepreneurship. Its goal is partnering with villages on self-sustaining projects that create independence.
