Gleneagles Team Wins Women's Tennis Challenge Cup
Presented by Tourism Fiji
Congratulations to Gleneagles Country Club (Plano, Texas), the winners of the 2013 ClubCorp Women’s Tennis Challenge Cup presented by Tourism Fiji, which took place at Barton Creek Resort & Spa in Austin, Texas. After three days of highly competitive tennis, the Gleneagles team of Donna Bennett, Christina Perron, Courtney Ries, and Joann Compton secured the Challenge Cup trophy with their excellent play. Congratulations also to Chris Brown, Director of Tennis and Henry Gonzales, Tennis Professional.
Second place went to the team from Barton Creek – Martha Fields, Jill Griffin, Lisa Fritsch, and Maryanne McKenzie – along with their tennis pros Monte Williams, Director of Tennis, John Brickley, Alex Baber and Ristine Olson.
The third place consolation trophy went to the team from Las Colinas Country Club (Irving, Texas), who won in a head-to-head tiebreaker against Stonebriar Country Club (Frisco, Texas). The Las Colinas team included Members Susan Ogata, Tanya Teeter, Jamie Boatright, Sharon Fletcher and their pros JJ Paulsen, Director of Tennis and Sean Teeter.
A second congratulations also goes to Sharon Fletcher of Las Colinas, who successfully defended her 8.0 division championship with new partner Jamie Boatright. Congratulations to both Sharon (again) and Jamie.
On the first day of play, the weather was much colder than average with gusting winds of up to 40 miles per hour, which affected the schedule somewhat. The tournament got back on track on day two playing extra rounds as the weather continued to warm up, creating a perfect day of play for the final rounds.
Nearly 60 percent of the matches had sets of 7-5 or split with an average match time of just over two hours in length. There were a few three hour matches but the longest match was four hours and 15 minutes in the 6.0 division between Brookhaven Country Club (Farmers Branch, Texas) and Stonebriar. Kudos to the Brookhaven 6.0 team of Annettte Quadling and Michele Hrnicek for the hard earned victory in that match.
The tournament was a great success with Barton Creek serving as the perfect venue and providing a wonderful experience for all participants. Tell your Members to start practicing for next year’s event, which is set to be held at Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa in beautiful Rancho Santa Fe, California. This is one event that tennis-loving Members won't want to miss! Watch for more details to come in the next few months.
