The 200 acres of rolling countryside known today as Stonehenge Golf & Country Club was originally the site of the Stonehenge Mines.
Coal from the deep shafts of the Stonehenge mines (still in existence on the property) was shipped to nearby Bellona Arsenal during the 1800's. It was open land where cattle grazed on the grassy slopes and meadows - a prime location for a golf and country club of unusual stature. Today the mines which still exist below the property, contain natural water which helps to maintain the lush grass even during adverse weather conditions.
The Stonehenge Golf & Country Club was chartered in 1968 and named for the abandoned mines as well as the prestigious neighborhood adjacent to the 200 acres. The golf course was designed by Ed Ault. In 1970, it was completed.
In 1995, Stonehenge Golf & Country Club joined the ClubCorp family. Stonehenge has a charming rural feel, though conveniently located near Richmond and surrounding urban area. Today, Stonehenge has more than 700 members. As a partner in ClubCorp, Stonehenge is one of about 200 clubs nationwide which have reciprocal agreements for services, such as dining and golf.
Stonehenge Golf & Country Club is always growing to meet the needs of its members. The golf course was completely renovated in 2003-4. The windows of the Grill Room were replaced recently to provide an unobstructed view of our beautiful course. Outside lighting and signs have been added to brighten and enlighten.
Today you can experience the charm and enjoy the natural serene beauty encompassing the Club. Amid a land full of history, a fresh spirit abounds at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club that is apparent upon the moment of arrival.
Stonehenge Golf & Country Club truly reflects a new spirit of commitment to the Members, their children, and their guests. The result...service and quality that many desire but few can achieve.
