“My husband always says that we are the poster children for ClubCorp,” says Cheryl Botts, with a laugh. And, it might be true. Cheryl and her husband, Stephen, have been Members at the University Center Club in Tallahassee, Florida, for 13 years. But it wasn’t until about four years ago that the couple decided they wanted to see the United States and made the decision to take advantage of their Signature Gold Unlimited benefit to do so. They purchased an RV and now spend between nine and 10 months of each year on the road stopping at as many properties in the ClubCorp network as possible – crossing each off their list as they do – and getting in a little sightseeing along the way too.
Their annual destinations include two weeks on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and three months in Phoenix, where they play as much golf as possible, taking advantage of all the clubs in Arizona. While in Phoenix, they also always fly to Palm Springs, California, to meet up with old friends they met, coincidentally, 10 years ago when they were paired up with them for a round in Hilton Head. The couples now meet annually to play golf at Indian Wells Country Club in Indian Wells, California, a golf course they deem as spectacular.
One of their favorite courses is Greystone Golf & Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama, which they say is both beautiful and challenging. Among their top traveling experiences was dinner at The University of Texas Club in Austin where they had the most fun. As their home club also is an alumni club, the Botts jokingly sparred with the staff and Members about which club was superior, traded football stories, and enjoyed a fabulous meal.
The Botts will continue their road trips, and serving as Signature Gold Unlimited ambassadors, for as long as there are clubs in the program out there that they have yet to visit. That could go on for a long time – Cheryl excitedly points out – as every time a new Private Clubs magazine comes out, it seems even more clubs are added to the program.
