Military Speaker Series

Buckhead Club Proudly Presents MILITARY SPEAKER SERIES: The Wicked Problem of Great Powers Competition" Wednesday, October 27 | 7:00 - 9:00 AM (Please join us for breakfast at 7:00 AM and panel discussion at 7:30 AM.) Featuring Our Subject Matter Experts Panel: Dr. Michael Capps, Diveplane Corporation CEO and Technologist; Kevin Donegan, Vice Admiral, USN (ret); Matt Kohler, Vice Admiral, USN (ret); and Bryan Ware, CEO, Next5 Moderated by Admiral Bob Wright, Buckhead Club Board Member and CEO, Baker Street Scientific ABOUT THE EVENT: Unsettling risk... unauthorized control of smart devices, ransomware attacks, election interference, unauthorized control of manufacturing and transportation systems, location data that's been economically weaponized. This is the new norm of Great Powers Competition (GPC). It represents a dangerous risk-combination of "likely to happen" and "dire consequence". Today, we're cooperating and competing with countries that are GPC threats. Please join us for a panel discussion with four Subject Matter Experts of near-peer competition in a GPC world. It's pre-World War II again, only now, the most important assets are no longer government, they're private with global and multinational corporations. Instead of The Department of Defense, we look to the Department of Homeland Security for defense of domestic networks and related control of physical environments. There are no set or defined characteristics of a Great Power, but we all acknowledge the contrasts of technology pursuits with democratic and autocratic governments. Government and Corporate Leaders are compelled to focus on the hybrid challenges of this long-term strategic competition. ADDITIONAL TALKING POINTS: Is technology impacting society or society impacting technology? Control of Technology Dominance Platforms will be central to our behavior, economics and thought. We have never faced this magnitude of disruptive threat(s) hacking both machines and minds. Hyper-connectivity enables deception at scale which strengthens the weak and weakens the strong. Could we now be living in a post-truth world? The bad actors are hiding in plain sight relying on obfuscations of deniability, and the difficulties of attribution. Obfuscation challenges can be more destructive than bringing down an entire network. A CYBER 911 is unlikely, but a teardown death by a thousand cuts is already underway. Threat nations, nation-states, and criminal groups are all waging ransomware attacks against American cities, energy suppliers, and other crucial infrastructure. The U.S. is rare country. We don’t use Intelligence resources to collect economic information to share with commercial sector. The rest of the world sees this differently… the U.S. is an outlier. It's like pre-WWII again - only now our tech sector is our big advantage. The U.S. needs to rally Tech Titans and Industrialists towards Technology Statecraft & Economic Diplomacy solutions. We need to Drive adoption of trusted technology throughout the world and rally partners towards a technology high ground. Navigating this challenge of digital threats will not be easy as much of our private sector answers to global shareholders, not American voters. Risk-reduction in GPC is challenging and more than a compliance posture. Incident Response Planning requires a competent team of stakeholders who both grasp the unique combination of technology and data and have a passionate interest in prevention and resilience. Reservations Required | $25++ per person 404.262.2262 to learn more or RSVP.
