We are thrilled to announce that our stunning new short game area is now open! As part of our multi-million-dollar renovation, we have made extensive improvements to this practice area to ensure that our Members have access to the best facilities possible.
Our new bunker and expansive chipping green, along with two putting greens, provide a truly immersive experience for golfers of all levels. With an orientation that allows for shots up to 60 yards to be hit into the chipping green, you can hone your skills and perfect your short game like never before. The improved shot variety options, including different heights of cuts and undulations, only add to the excitement.
The Golf Course
Nestled in Gig Harbor, Washington, Canterwood Golf and Country Club, designed by renowned architect Robert Muir Graves in 1988, boasts an acclaimed 18-hole championship course known for its challenging layout and scenic beauty. Graves integrated the towering firs, pines, and cedars into the course, featuring giant fir tree stumps as a signature design element, adding both aesthetic appeal and strategic complexity. Coaching & Club Fitting
Canterwood Golf and Country Club goes beyond the greens, offering a comprehensive golf instruction program for all skill levels. With private and series lessons available from the experienced staff, adults can join the "Game On" program for beginners, while junior golfers can participate in the "Crush It" series and "Crush It Camps," along with the PGA Junior Golf League. The club also provides complimentary Junior Clinics and Adult Supervised Practice sessions. Additionally, Canterwood features a state-of-the-art Trackman with an inside swing room for recreation, fitting, and teaching, allowing members to refine their skills in any season, and during the summer, the Trackman experience extends outdoors.
Retail Offerings
Canterwood’s Golf Shop provides a premier retail experience with a diverse selection of top-tier golf clubs, featuring brands such as TaylorMade, Ping, Titleist, Callaway, Cobra, Mizuno, and PXG. Offering approximately 30 fitting days each season, members have ample opportunities to find the perfect equipment to enhance their game. In addition to cutting-edge clubs, the golf shop caters to both men and women with a stylish array of golf apparel from respected brands like FootJoy, Johnnie-O, Peter Millar, Straight Down, Travis Mathew, Nivo, Sun Ice, Puma, and Under Armour. About Al
I am super excited to be back at Canterwood after nearly 20 years! I have been the Head Professional at Kitsap Golf & Country Club for the past 15 years, and even dabbled at McCormick Woods for a few years before that. However, I am excited to rekindle my friendship with old friends, and meet all the new Members that have joined since the last time I was at Canterwood. My wife Sherri and I have lived in Gig Harbor since 1990 and are celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary this August. We are the proud parents of Hanna (23) and Ben (21) who continue to take up our focus outside of work. Other than work and kids, we enjoy live music, good wine and boating. In 1991, I won 5 WWC Pro-Ams and was named the Western Washington Chapter Championship, Senior Champion. I have also been the Washington State Assistant Professional runner up 3 times (I never won, darn it).

About Jim
Jim was the Head Professional in Tucson, Arizona for 17 years then the Director of Training and Sales for Henry-Griffitts, a golf club fitting and manufacturer for 18 years. He then moved back into teaching at his academy in Naples, Florida for eight years before returning to the Pacific Northwest. Jim was most recently at Tualatin Country Club, just outside of Portland, as the Director of Player Development for the last seven years. During that time he was awarded the Oregon Chapter PGA Teacher of the Year in 2016 and 2018.
Jim is married to his beautiful wife Earline Mapother and together have six children and ten grandchildren.
Jim's desire is to help people find more enjoyment in their club experience through instruction and player development programs. Jim would love to take some time to discuss shared golfing experiences with you.

About Matthew
Matt grew up in the Kansas City suburbs and enlisted in the Army Infantry in 2004. After three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he was medically retired in 2015. He calls University Place home, where he lives with his wife Richelle, two daughters, Lilyan and Laylah, three dogs, and their cat, Brooks Kattka. His first job in the golf industry was at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma, where he was for four years and eventually turned professional. Matt enjoys playing competitive golf as much as possible (Canadian Mini-Tour(s), Sectional, and Chapter events) but enjoys teaching junior golf even more. You can usually find him trying to recruit the "next superstar" to his PGA Junior League teams and various camps. His favorite golfers are Tiger Woods, Seve Ballasteros, Tom Watson, and Andrew Putnam. Matt feels it is his honor and privilege to serve the members of Canterwood, and he's thankful to be a part of this Club.
